After Effects is a powerful programme, which can be made even better with the addition of plugins. They can help you save time and create some truly stunning effects. 

Element 3D

This plugin allows users to create and render 3D objects directly from After Effects. It may not be as in depth as Cinema 4D, but it allows fast previews and renders.

Trapcode Particular

Particular has become one of the most popular plugins for its ease of us and plently of modifications allowing many different outcomes.Used in films such as Spider Man and Angels and Demons. You can create sparks, fire, water, snow, smoke and other organic effects and works with your cameras. 

Optical Flares

Working with cameras, this plugin allows flares to be made and integrates easier and faster with your work than its competitors. You can use one of their many great presets or make your own from scratch. 


Plexus is another commonly used plugin which saves time in creating geometric imagery while still being easily customisable. Dots, lines and facets can all be created with endless possibilities of effects created.


This 2D physics engine for After Effects allows you to create gravity, friction, magnetism other effects using a simulator which turns movement into keyframes.

Not strictly a plugin, but still worth a mention is Ease and Wizz. It is a set of expressions for After Effects that give you more ways to interpolate between values. The obvious use is in motion, but they can be used on animated properties of any kind. They're applied with an After Effects-ish palette that can be docked, so it's very easy to use.
