Interview with the creators of Boords

Animation company Animade have designed and developed an easy way for creatives to storyboard online. We asked them a few questions about the useful web-app..

Tell us a little about Animade...

Animade is a London-based animation studio, founded by James Chambers and Tom Judd in 2010. We’re big believers in the power of character to bring a story to life, and this is carried into everything we do – from expressive animations to experimental web-toys.

Why did you make Boords?

Boords began when Tom and James were discussing the pain points of storyboarding over a burger one lunchtime... and then the idea was born. Boords: storyboarding made simple! We started using it in the studio and it became an indispensable tool for our team. So we thought, why not open it up to the rest of the world?

What do you think are the best features?

One of the things we pride ourselves on with Boords is its simplicity. From the start we’ve strived to make it intuitive and easy to use, removing the faff of the old ways of storyboarding as much as possible. It’s all about making storyboarding simple, collaborative and fun.

Its versatility means it can be used in so many different ways, and we’ve already learnt so much about our incredible users: from advertisers to UX designers, documentary-makers to teachers, children’s book illustrators to space agencies!

How can you send a storyboard made in Boords to clients?

When you're ready to share your storyboard, you can easily export it as a tailored PDF, or via a private link – a speedy way to show progress to your clients or teammates, whilst keeping it confidential.

You are a animation studio as did you fit in developing Boords?

Boords started as a project within the Animade studio, and has now grown to the point where a few members of our team have become dedicated Boords specialists. So, Animade continues in exactly the same way – just with an extra team beavering away on Boords among us! We’re all very close-knit across the whole studio. It’s a bonus working with a team of animators, as it means we have a first-hand understanding of what is really needed in a storyboarding tool – and what works for the people who use it.

What are the different account options and what does this mean for the user?

A Pro plan is ideal for professionals who make storyboards fairly often, offering unlimited projects and storyboards as well as a drawing tool. A Team plan gives you everything the Pro plan does, but with the very handy bonus of being able to collaborate with teammates on the same storyboards – making the whole process as streamlined and simple as can be.

A Basic plan is free and lets you try out Boords with two storyboards. As soon as you sign up, you’ll get a free trial of the Team account which enables you to try out all the premium features for a limited time. More details about all our plans can be found on our pricing page:

Are there any future plans for Boords?

We’re continually working away on updates, improvements and new features. We like to keep in touch with our users and take on their feedback, which we review every week in a team meeting. We also run a public roadmap to keep all our users up to date. We think it’s helpful for everyone that way – and it’s always nice as a user to feel involved in the development of a product.

Our users’ feedback has been such a driving force so far, and has influenced many of our updates, including the recent multiple layout options for PDF exports. Expect a new commenting feature next… and more exciting stuff to come this year. All will be revealed!

Does Animade have anything else exciting in the pipeline?

As well as our wonderful client projects that keep us busy, we love making our own passion projects and quick bits of downtime experimentation whenever we have a bit of time to spare. Keep an eye on our Instagram for regular bursts of animation fun:

We’ll also be speaking at Blend Festival in Vancouver in May, which we’re very much looking forward to!

Thanks for Animade for sharing their story.
