Ravensbourne 2012 is a 2-day broadcast and design event. This student organised event is not only a way of showcasing their industry focused skills to companies from all areas of the Broadcast, Fashion and Design industry but also an opportunity to use their knowledge and collaborate with other students in a real broadcast event.
Located next to the 02 Arena in Greenwich, this is the second time the event has been held here since their move from Chislehurst in Kent. Visitors were able to watch live content being created, go and see keynotes by experts and meet graduate students in their degree shows. Short animations and films that are written, directed and shot by students were showcased on their cinema screen.
Ravensbourne has always taken pride in the collaboration by students and this is aided by the open plan layout in their new site. Classes and work areas are not held in rooms, but in various communal spaces around the building which encourages cross-course communication and collaboration. There has been a mixed response from the students to this type of learning, many saying that it took over a year to adjust and embrace this new way of working but everybody we spoke to agreed that it was a great way of working.
Overall, this was an interesting and well-run event. Combining degree shows with the broadcast event (something that wasn't possible until last year) means that visitors can see a wide variety of work, shows and lectures that all come together to create an event that has something for everyone, regardless of their field in the industry. There were various pieces of work based around the theme of light, including an interactive installation where visitors could use ropes to 'pour' light from suspended buckets above them, and a projection mapped piece named 'seasons' that explored our relationship between the sun and time.
Some of the students really stood out for the quality of their work and professionalism, and there were a lot of great things on show. Newcomers to look out for are Jan Barcikowski, Ryan Dzierzek and Bence Bilekov. Take a look at our accompanying article to find out more about the best Motion Graphics graduates.
